no.30 is a newly launched home and giftware brand, but has its roots in a long-established family run zinc alloy foundry in the city of Changhua in Taiwan. Named after the atomic number for zinc in the periodic table, the brand builds upon this metal and the skilled craftsmanship required for casting and finishing it.
This inaugural collection of objects is the result of a rather unusual design process, defined primarily by the properties and manufacturing constraints of this particular material. While widely used for industrial applications, zinc is perhaps not commonly associated with preciousness, performance or premium products. However, as designers we reject such material prejudice. We believe each material has its own unique qualities and, when thoughtfully used, the result can display integrity, honesty and beauty.
The no.30 objects are varied in terms of typology and surface finish, but unified in material, thought and purposefulness. They share a certain gravitas and an ambition to form long-term relationships with their users. The objects are designed to add a special touch and ambience to any environment without dominating it or demanding too much attention. The collection so far includes a centrepiece bowl, a fruit platter, geometric storage containers, candlesticks, tealight holders, an ashtray, a bottle opener and Chinese zodiac figurines (a horse and goat so far, with a monkey in the making for next Lunar New Year).
